Charles J. Vlieland was a Doctor of Medicine and he was born in Farnham Green, in the county of Surrey (now a suburb south of London). Therefore he probably came to Exeter to work as a doctor after qualifying. His wife had been born in Stalisfield, Kent, the parish where his father had been the Vicar, so he must have met her there when he was growing up.They also had live-in servants
However, there were quite a few references in the Trewman's Exeter Flying Post newspaper to the activities of Dr. Charles Vlieland as a doctor and a member of the Corporation of Exeter, and also to the social activities of Mrs Vlieland.
Dr Vlieland became the Medical Officer for St Thomas, which was the local council area where he lived. He was therefore involved in sanitary and health issues in his area.
We mentioned him before:
As our ancestor in 1911 Charles James Vlieland was a lord Mayor there.
In Exeters Mayors It is stated that:-Charles James Vlieland was a Doctor who lived in West Southernhay.

During his time as Mayor, he opened Rougemont Gardens for the public.

We asked for more information the local historian.
Coincedence or not in may 2009 there is a photo of the opening of the Rougemont gardens in the newspaper

He is mentioned in a lot of medical journals.

In the london newspaper of 1890 we find this entry
NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership which
has for some time past been carried on by Mark
Farrant and Charles James Vlieland, under the firm of

the county of Devon, in the profession or business of

CHARLES JAMES VLIELAND

This blog and the search for Jerome Nicholas Vlieland started with this letter..

Charles James Vlieland
We found a new entry at the CBG *durch center of genealogy in the Hague.
We found a letter bu CJ Vlieland to ask for information about his Dutch relatives.
(Opnieuw een bericht gevonden bij het Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie(CBG). Al in 1905 schrijft Charles James Vlieland of het CBG hem informatie kan verstrekken over zijn Nederlandse verwanten.)
It does not help him. After 100 years history repeats and we are looking for the same ancestors. So like the da vinci code we now have to find the Vlieland Code.So help us to find the story behind Jerome Nicholas Vlieland.
Denk mee. Laat ons gezamenlijk de oplossing doen vinden.

Dear Sir
In November 1902 you wrote me in answer of an advert, I put in a Dutch Newspaper
I have, owing to certain circumstances let the matter drop .for the time.
I am now desirious of getting certain information if possible.
A certificate of the birth of my grandfather which would I suppose give the name ,social position place of residence of his father also whether there was a family crest
Certain of my relatives think it was a stork with a snake in its bill.
The following details are all I can give you.
If you consider that with them it is useless to proceed please say so
I state you for giving such advice
If you think it is worthwhile kindly let me now what your charges will be ( inclusive)
I will tell you what I am prepared to do.
My Grandfather was born June 27 1796 his name was Jerome Nicholas Vlieland.
(like the island in the Zuijderzee) shown in maps of Holland
His ancestors supposed to have been de Vlielands
One of his grandchildren , a cousin of mine was christened Janson de Vlieland Vlieland
I do not know where in Holland he was born probably at or in near the Hague or Amsterdam
He came to this country with some other members of his family when probably about 25 years old.
He is said to have come as a “refuge” but why I do not know. personally he seems to have had some kind of hatred of the French
He is said to have had an uncle an officer in the Dutch Navy John Vlieland who was killed fighting by the French.
My Grandfather would have been a well educated man ,as he made his living as a professor of languages and wrote volumes in French German and Italian
I should say he was certainly not a Roman Catholic
I am
Yours faithfully
C.J.Vlieland

A case of poisoning
An interesting inquest was held at the Lamb into a mysterious case of poisoning in 1890. Mr John Dew, of Exwick, found his wife Anne dead, early on a Friday morning. He told the Deputy-Coroner, Mr Gould, that at 6pm on the previous evening his wife, who was 51, was laying on the bed when he came home from work - he said to her "Why don't you get up and do some mangling?" She replied that she would very soon. At 10pm, still on the bed undressed, she requested a cup of tea. He took her the tea, of which Mrs Dew drank half and then told her husband she wanted to go to sleep, so he left her. Mr Dew slept downstairs that night and the next morning at a quarter to six, Mr Dew went to see his wife and found her quite dead. Mrs Dew's body was was on her side, on the bed – her eyes were dilated, and she was black around the mouth and nose, possible signs of poisoning. He told the coroner that his wife was in the habit of drinking alcoholic liquors. By the bed were two bottles and a glass – the bottles were labelled as containing liniment which his daughter used to apply to her legs. Mr Dew had no reason to think his wife had committed suicide. The Dew's two sons gave evidence, stating they did not think their mother had been intoxicated that evening. Louisa Bond, of Exwick, called in to Mrs Dew with some mangling that evening, and stated that Mrs Dew was complaining of feeling very cold, but was not intoxicated. The contents of one of the bottles and glass was found by a chemist to contain ammonia and belladonna. Dr Vlieland also gave evidence and recalled that six months previously he had Mrs Dew taken into hospital after she had taken Keating's insect powder mixed in a cup. The coroner stated that death was caused by taking belladonna, but that there was no evidence that it was accidental or deliberate.
