John Howard Swanberg

John Howard Swanberg, the son of Andrew and Christine Erickson Swanberg, was born in Little Falls, MN, on March 11, 1899. He was graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1925 with a degree in Civil Engineering, and was first employed by the Minnesota Department of Highways as a materials inspector that same year. He obtained a Master of Science degree from the University of Minnesota in 1929.
Mr. Swanberg spent several years with the Koppers Company in Pittsburgh. He joined the Minnesota Department of Highways in 1925 and was named Engineer of Materials and Research in 1946. He became Construction Engineer in 1956, Chief Engineer in 1957, and nine years later was appointed Deputy Commissioner.
Mr. Swanberg made many significant research reports in the field of highway materials and construction to the American Society of Testing and Materials, the Highway Research Board, and the American Association of State Highway Officials.
He also served as president of the Minnesota Federation of Engineering Societies, the Minnesota Surveyors and Engineer’s Society and the Mississippi Valley Conference of State Highway Departments. He was a member of the American Road Builder’s Association, the Minnesota and National Society of Professional Engineers, and the Society of American Military Engineers.
In 1968 Mr. Swanberg was recipient of the Roy W. Crum Distinguished Service Award from the Highway Research Board in recognition of outstanding achievements in the field of highway research. The Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota presented an Outstanding Achievement Award to him in 1971.
In World War II Mr. Swanberg was in a Naval Construction Battalion with duty in the Pacific theater. He rose to the rank of Commander. Prior to his entering the University he had served in the U.S. Army in World War I.
Mr. Swanberg died on January 9, 1973, and is survived by his wife, Florence Vlieland ; a son, John; a daughter, Joan (Mrs. I. Johnson); two brothers; two sisters; and three grandchildren.
John Howard Swanberg was elected to the Society in 1957 as a Member. He was accorded the rank of Fellow in 1959. From 1967-1968 Mr. Swanberg served as president of the Northwestern Section.
