Ann Samworth

As we can read in the census Ann Samworth lived at the Vicarage.

ANN SAMWORTH, Spinster, Deceased. Pursuant to the statute 22nd and 23rd Victoria, cap. 35, intituled " An Act to further amend the Law of Property, and to relieve Trustees." WHEREAS Ann Samworth, formerly of No. 11, Heathfield-terrace, Turnham-green, in the county of Middlesex, but late of Stalisfield Vicarage, Stalisfield, in the county of Kent, Spinster, died at Stalisfield Vicarage aforesaid, on the 31st day of December, 1871, having first made and executed her last will and testament, dated the 7th day of October, 1864; and whereas probate of the said will was, on the 2nd day of March, 1872, granted, NOTICE is hereby given.

WE, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for England, acting in pursuance of the Act of thetwenty-ninth and thirtieth years of Her Majesty,
chapter one hundred and eleven, sections five and eleven, do hereby grant and appropriate out of our common fund to the vicarage of Stalisfield, in the county of Kent, and in the diocese of Canterbury, one capital sum of fifty-one pounds sixteen
shillings and ten pence, such capital sum to be applied by us in discharging the. amount payable to the Governors of the Bounty of Queen Anne for the augmentation and maintenance of the Poor Clergy, under a subsisting mortgage of the said vicarage of Stalisfield, which was effected by a deed bearing date the twenty-fifth day of November, in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty-one, for the purpose of providing a parsonage or house of residence for the said vicarage of Stalisfield.
In witness whereof, we have here unto set our common seal, this twenty-first day of
July, in the year one thousand eight hundred and seventy.

described in the schedule hereunto annexed, and are now vested in us, to have and to hold the said tithe commutation rent charges to the use of the said Incumbent and his successors for ever:
Provided always, that the said tithe commutation rent charges shall be and be held to be in lieu of
and in substitution for the annual stipend of twenty-five pounds, heretofore payable by us the said Commissioners to the Incumbent of the said vicarage, in respect of certain property formerly belonging to the Archbishoprick of Canterbury : And provided also, that the said tithe commutation rent charges shall also be and be held to be at all times for ever hereafter charged and chargeable in exoneration of all other property whatsoever, now or formerly' belonging to the said Archbishoprick of Canterbury, with the liability to repair and maintain the chancel of the church of
Stalisfield aforesaid; and provided further, that the Incumbent for the time being of the same vicarage shall be entitled to receive from us, or on our account, the net amount of the rents, profits, and proceeds of the said tithe commutation rent charges as from the first day of October, in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty-nine.

In the church in Stalisfield are stained glass windows with the name Jerome Nicholas on them.

Elisabeth Samworth

Elisabeth Bride als known as Elisabeth Samworth was married more then once .
First she married a Mr.Calcraft then she was married to a Mr Lefebre and later to John Samworth.
What has this to do with the Vlieland history you might ask.
Well, in the Vlieland heritage is a plate with a seal.
This seal is from the Lefebres and was therefore in the possession of the wife op Jerome Nicholas Vlieland who was the stepdaughter of this Elisabeth Bride and the daughter of John Samworth.
Elisabeth an actress died in 1826.

Dorothy´s grave

Thanks to James Sprague in Exeter we can see the gravestone in Higher Cemetery in Exeter.We like to thank him for the photographs !
The close-up shows that the stone is both a memorial to Frances Maude and a gravestone for Dorothy Vlieland
.
Iris Sutton, the archivist of St David's, is going to explore the Roll of honour on which Dorothy´s name appears in the New Year.
Family rumours are that she did something heroic during the war.

Dorothy Vlieland

Again in the newspaper The Western Times Friday 22 June 1917 is the funeral of Dorothy Vlieland.

flowers were sent by fellow workers at V.A.D.Hospital.

She was buried at the Higher Cemetery in Exeter and the Archdeacon of Exeter officiated.
The coffin was of unpolished and paneled English oak with brass fittings and bore the inscription born 15th February 1885 at rest 17th June 1917.
The grave was lined with laurels and ferns.
Flowers were sent by her father C.J.Vlieland and his wife .
Mr and Mrs D.E.Batty Clifford Peel nephew ,Barbara Peel niece ,Mr.C.A Vlieland and Mrs Vlieland

The Lord Bishop of Marlborough's gift to the bride was a pa.per-knifg in case, with heavy chased silver handle, and on the long ivory blade were engraved miniature representations tlie Cathedral, the Guildhall, the Cap of Maintenance, and the City Arms. In addition, it (bore the following verse, written by hie lordship:— Forget not, Bride, whatever lot be thine, Tihe .Ever Faithful .City and its Shrine ; The City where thy parent sat as head, The Holy (Shrine in whidh his ohi'ld was wed. lave worthy both, all happiness -be thine. The honoured parent and tihe Holy Shrine. The design was the work Messrs. Depree and Young, Exeiter. - During afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Batty lerflt for the Continent to spend the honeymoon in Belgium and Holland. The bride's travelling dress was of saxe blue silk eolienne, with coatee of laoe the same colour, and sash of silk. Her hat was white bagel, with blue Lancer plumes and shaded pansies. The costume was supplied Messrs. Bros., as also other portions her trousseau. Mr. W. J. Coombes, the Princes Nurseries, St. Thomas, supplied .the wedding bell and sniilax decorations at the Guildhall, the flowers, palms, etc., at the Cathedral, and a bouquet for the Mayoress. A canopy at the Guildhall, the carpeting of the nave at the Cathedral, and the erection of the porch the West door were the work of Mr. R. M. Flint, of Exeter. The wedding ,cake was supplied by Messrs. Murc.li, Goff, and Co., Broadgate. They also were entrusted with the catering. The bride's dresses and those of the bridesmaids and the bride's mother were designed and made by Messrs. Green and Son, Exeter. Messrs. Rush and Co. supplied the wedding bouquetsy Mr. J. Browning, art photographer, of Exeter, took the wedding portraits. 'Die silver fl-ay and the brooch that were the City's gifts the bride were supplied Mr. W. U. Lisle, Fore-street, Exeter. "

It's a bit odd (as rather lovely), as it's a Hail Mary window and generally 'Virgin-Mary-veneration' was more in the Roman Catholic than the Anglican (Protestant) tradition. Perhaps the Rev J N V was what we call 'High Church' ('Anglo-Catholic').

Jerome Nicholas Vlieland the younger also known as the vicar or the reverend.
English census of 1861.
I found Jerome N. Vlieland the Younger, Vicar of Stalisfield, living with wife Frances and their four children and an aunt of the wife, in the Vicarage in Stalisfield, Kent.
They also had live-in servants.

They are Buried on the north side of the church and East of the path to the porch
Jerome Nicholas Vlieland the younger was the vicar of Stalisfield.

In the graveyard we still can find the gravestones.
