John Vlieland


840 Nov 21st John Vlieland agd 15 drowned at Northfleet , Thames,dec fell from the rigging of "the Gratitude "Seeton sluice.
This John must have been born in 1825 as he is aged 15 in 1849.
He is the son of John Vlieland and Mary Grimmer.

Here the ship Gratitude in 1840 with a good view on the dangerous rigging.

Captain Cornelis Smit was, during the building of his new ship, given a guarantee by NHM for two more voyages from the Dutch East Indies to the Netherlands. In appreciation he named his ship. 'In Gratitude to N.H.M.' Water colour by Jacob Spin, 1840.
