John Vlieland

Today we focus on John Vlieland.or is he Jan Hollander This is what we know.
Church records (no mention of witnesses in early records)
At Southwolds, Suffolk about 20 miles south on the coast below Great Yarmouth.
Marriage of John Vlieland, single man and Mary Grimmer, single woman, 13 May 1824.
Baptism of John Nicholls Vlieland son of John and Mary Vlieland is 18 Jan 1826 Southwold Suffolk.
Census records record Mary Vlieland as alive and a servant on a nearby farm in 1841 but in 1842 she marries 19 APR 1842 Wrentham, Suffolk, England Robert Denny who runs that farm.

This could also be the widow Vlieland that remarries.

Church records for Great Yarmouth

On 2 Oct 1838 a John Vlieland full age Bachelor, sailor, (father Yarhan Vlieland Sailor) marries Jane Francis Martin, full age, widow, dressmaker (father William Waters, sailor)









This Jane is Jane Francis Waters born and christened in 1802 in St Nicholas Yarmouth daughter of William Waters and Anne Covell and widow of Michael Martin.
On 28 Feb 1842 above John dies aged 45 years Mariner resident "on the Walls" @ Gt Yarmouth. (death certificate)
Burial at dissenters graveyard, Market Street, Great Yarmouth, Grave 609, 8th March 1842 aged 45 years.




Also we find in the Southwold Diary
1840 Nov 21st John Vlieland agd 15 drowned at Northfleet , Thames,dec fell from the rigging of "the Gratitude "Seeton sluice.
This John must have been born in 1825 as he is aged 15 in 1849.
Here the ship Gratitude in 1840 with a good view on the dangerous rigging.
Captain Cornelis Smit was, during the building of his new ship, given a guarantee by NHM for two more voyages from the Dutch East Indies to the Netherlands. In appreciation he named his ship. 'In Gratitude to N.H.M.' Water colour by Jacob Spin, 1840.
