William Samuel Stevens

William Samuel Stevens bap 17th Sept 1819 was the father of Thomas Pearman Stevens (one of 7 children of Thomas Stevens and Elizabeth Randolph Stevens of Caversham and Mapleduram) and Mary Kate Pearman Stevens born about 1824.




William Samuel was in 1844/45 a farmer at Blounts Court Farm, Rotherfield Peppard but by 1847 a Farmer of Gatehampton in the parish of Goring, Oxfordshire, described as a gentleman of Streatley and Gatehampton.

Thomas Pearman Stevens Senior, his son was born 3rd Feb 1845 in Rotherfield Peppard.

He and his family lived in a big house with many servants in Corsham, Nr. Bath.
Due to a big bank smash about 1898 he lost most of his capital.
He was a partner in a brewery belonging to his 1st wife's family.
He sold his share in this business and moved his family to Bath to a small house where they managed with one maid.
Thomas sold his interests in the firm in 1887, about the time he married his second wife Alice Vlieland. At his marriage to Alice he is a brewer at Upton, Berks. 9th March 1887.
He must have reinvested his money as he is said to be a brewer on Grans Bap certificate for 1892 .
He did not die until about 1906.
He moved his family to Dover, so his sons by Alice could study as day boys at Dover College.

Thomas's grandfather:
James Pearman was a Farmer 200 Acres Employs 8 Men And Boys in 1851 census. He also had grandson James Morrison Stevens age 4 staying with him and his wife (and an unmarried son and daughter)

1861 census Gatehampton Farm, Goring, Oxfordshire - Farmer Occupying 550 Acres age 41 with second wife Ellen.
Saturday 28 April 1883 Reading Mercury (and Morning Post - Thursday 26 April 1883) - Stevens.—On the 2lst inst., at Coombe, Streatley, William Samuel Stevens (late of Gatehampton), aged 63.
