Years ago we were asked to look for the roots of Jerome Nicholas Vlieland in Holland by his relatives in England
His great great grandson told a lot about him as he still did know him.
Jerome Nicholas told him he was a Hollander .His father was Jan and his father again a Jan .
So that made him Jan Janszoon(John John) Vlieland.
He hated the French because they killed his brother Jan .And he was born in 1796.
Ans so started our research.After years of searching ,we found him in Rotterdam .Jerome Nicholas Hollander born in 1796 and son of Jan Janssen .
So he was not only a Hollander , he was named like that as well
So that was it.We found him , his father and mother ,but why did he go to England, why was he called Vlieland and not Hollander. He married and had children.
His son was not only a vicar , but master of languages as well and he wrote books about dancing and knitting .

It is always on your mind if you are looking in Rotterdam in the archives in the Napoleontic time.
And today we found in Rotterdam a Jan Vlieland .Maybe the brother who was to be killed later.
He was captain on the ship Wilhelmina .Imprisoned by the French and escaped from the cachot by burning the wood of the prison with the hinges of his bed.
It is an even better story then Les Miserables we think.

Mijn theorie is (theorieën blijken helaas zelden te kloppen) dat;
Jeroens Alderts is weduwnaar, vormt samen met Katharina Fritz, weduwe van Jan Jansz Hollander een gezin en zij vestigen zich via oa. Rotterdam en Brugge uiteindelijk in Engeland.

Al vele jaren zijn vele mensen op de wereld aan het zoeken naar de afkomst van Jerome Nicholas Vlieland.
Een theorie die niet bewezen wordt, verondersteld dat hij is gerelateert aan de Katwijks/Noordwijkse familie VLIELAND. HET OVERTUIGEND BEWIJS IS ECHTER NOOIT GEVONDEN.
Wat we weten:
Hij geeft zelf als geboortedatum 27-06-1796 en als geboorteplaats Rotterdam.
Daar vinden we een Jeroen Nicolaas, geboren op die datum, hij draagt echter de familienaam HOLLANDER. Zijn vader is Jan Jansz Hollander, zijn moeder is Katharina Fritz. Hij heeft broers en zussen. Genoemd: Jan, Seijke en Maria. Bij de doop van Jerome zijn getuige Georg de Wolff en Maria van den Berg.
In Engeland vindt hij zijn bestaan als professor in talen.
Na zijn geboorte is hij even zoek tot hij rond 1822 in Great Yarmouth opduikt.
Hij trouwt met Sara Heath en krijgt kinderen, waaronder de Vicar of Stalisfield en in zijn nageslacht treft u de burgemeester van Exeter, Charles James Vlieland en the Secretary for Defense in Malaya, Charles Archibald Vlieland die schrijft onder het pseudoniem Jerome Nicholas .

Did It Really Help to be a Japanese Colony? East Asian Economic Performance in Historical Perspective [1]
Demographic indicators are probably a more reliable guide to changes in living standards over time than wage data. We do not have long time series on, for example, infant mortality rates for all parts of East and South East Asia for the early part of the twentieth century, but we do have figures for most countries by the 1930s. It seems clear that infant mortality rates were lower in Taiwan, the Philippines and British Malaya than in Indonesia, Indochina and Burma (Table 14). The data on crude death rates (which are probably less reliable, as they are derived from registration data) tell a similar story. There can be little doubt that infant mortality rates and crude death rates fell in Taiwan over the Japanese period, and life expectancy increased (Barclay 1954: Tables 36, 37 and 39). Kimura (1993: 643) argues that there was also a decline in death rates in Korea after 1920. In the Philippines there was also some decline in both indicators over the American period (Zablan 1978: Tables 79 and 90). Banens (2000: Table 7) shows a decline in infant mortality rates among the Vietnamese population in Hanoi between 1925 and 1938, admittedly from a very high level, while in British Malaya, Vlieland (1932: 110) estimates a fall of around a third in the Straits Settlements between 1911 and 1931. No doubt in all cases, colonial governments would have attributed these declines to better access to modern health facilities, and especially in urban areas, to better provision of sanitation and clean drinking water[9].
Infant mortality rates were often higher in urban than rural areas, probably due to lack of clean water, and poor sanitation. Gooszen (1999: 192-3) cites Dutch research which found very high infant mortality of more than 400 per thousand in parts of Batavia (Jakarta) in 1917-19, which were similar to those reported by Banens (2000: 36) for Hanoi. Vlieland (1932:110) found that infant mortality rates in urban Singapore were higher than in the more rural Federated Malay States.

Of the parish of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, bachelor an married Sarah Heath of the parish of Hemblington, (daughter of Large landowner and genter of the parish).

A hunt that started many years ago with a note discovered in the Center for Genealogy in The Hague.
And a Lady from America Betty Lebeau who was searching for an ancestor from England with a Dutch sounding name
It would turn out many years later that was correct.
In the archives of Rotterdam was a birthcertificate with his first names on it, but with a different surname.
His birthdate was correct and the names of his father and mother were also correct.
Een speurtocht die al vele jaren eerder van start ging door een briefje ontdekt bij het Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie te 's-Gravenhage.
Betty Lebeau's briefje, een dame uit de Verenigde Staten van Amerika die op zoek was naar een uit Engeland afkomstige voorvader met een Hollandse achternaam.
Dat dat klopte zou veel later blijken: uit het Rotterdams stadsarchief komt een afschrift van zijn inschrijving in het doopregister.

The Asbestos Mask - Jerome Nicholas

This book was once owned by Kathleen Davies (August 1948). Inside there is a letter to Miss Davies from the author, who signs himself as Archie Wheeland. The endorsement in the book explains that Jerome Nicholas is 'his alter ego'.
The letter itself is interesting:
"Dear Miss Davies
Thank you very much for your efforts over the Birmingham Mail. I am very glad to have the extra copies - one I shall now be able to send to my beloved mother in law, who is the Anne of the dedication (To Another Anne whose spirits as unquenchable as my love for her) and will be thrilled to bits!

Opnieuw een bericht gevonden bij het Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie(CBG). Al in 1905 schrijft Charles James Vlieland of het CBG hem informatie kan verstrekken over zijn Nederlandse verwanten.
Hij komt er niet verder mee. Bijna honderd jaar later roept de geschiedenis om een oplossing. Dus speur mee en vindt de aansluiting. Zijn grootvader Jerome Nicholas hebben we al teruggevonden in Rotterdam. Jan Jansz Hollander zijn de namen van zijn vader. Inmiddels weten we iets meer over Charles James Vlieland. Hij is burgemeester geweest van de stad EXETER
1911 Charles James Vlieland - was a Doctor who lived in West Southernhay. During his time as Mayor, he opened Rougemont Gardens for the public. Charles Vlieland's grandfather was Dutch and he has living relatives in the Netherlands].
