Charles Archibald Vlieland

VLIELAND, Charles Archibald is the son of Charles James Vlieland and Alice Edith Millen.
He was baptised Sep 1890 at St Thomas Devon 5b 59

He was married to  Dorothy Margaret Morgan and  Audrey Louisa Hubert née Hanhart
Vlieland Charles A Morgan Cardiff 11a 705

From his marriage Dec 1914 - Cardiff (1837-1974),Glamorgan,Monmouthshire to Dorothy Margaret Morgan .

Margaret Francis Morgan Vlieland

His second marriage to Audrey Louisa Hubert born Middlesex.in 1956 Holborn

He was educated at Exeter School and Balliol College, Oxford; held various appointments in the Malayan Civil Service,

You can read more about that in his Malayan years
He wrote a lots of books.and dedicated them  to his wife  Margaret Morgan
And used for these books the alias of Jerome Nicolas
The Widow's Peak [A novel][1946]
The Asbestos Mask [1948]
Whispering Steel [1949]
Salute to To-Morrow [1949]
Deirdre [1952]
Charles Archibald's great-niece tells us
Charles Archibald rose very fast in the Malayan Service and wrote the Malayan Census of 1932, but seems to have made few friends and, more important, allies on the way up (his nickname, sadly, was 'Starchy Archie'). He was a brilliant linguist and spoke several native dialects of Penang, Perak and Selangor and went hunting with the local rajahs. They told him that the Japanese would come by land down the Malay peninsula but when he put this to a military strategy meeting early in the war no one supported him: 'rubbish', said the military, 'the Japanese will come by sea and be smashed by impregnable Fortress Singapore'. (I think he may have also encountered some prejudice as not being 'quite British', i.e. a quarter Dutch, and this told against him as well, and he was a civilian who knew as much about strategy as the military themselves, which would have caused some ripples.) He returned to Britain, and was proved only too right in late 1941 and early 1942 when the Japanese rolled up the peninsula in eight weeks and took Singapore. Naively, he seems to have thought that even after having poured egg on the faces of the top brass they would welcome him back in 1945, but he was pensioned off to write the stack of memoirs now held in the Imperial War Museum, mentioned in the blog, trying to justify his position.
Of course, this story is told from Charles Archibald's point of view; the British genuinely, if complacently, thought that the defences of Singapore constructed in 1938 would repel any attack and saw no need to take advice from a civilian member of the administration with somewhat dubious native contacts.

Lord Mayor's show

While watching the Lord Mayor's Show in London , we wondered if our ancestor took part in such a show in Exeter.
As our ancestor in 1911 Charles James Vlieland was a lord Mayor there.
In Exeters Mayors It is stated that:-Charles James Vlieland was a Doctor who lived in West Southernhay. During his time as Mayor, he opened.Rougemont Gardens for the public. Charles Vlieland's grandfather was Dutch and he has living relatives in the Netherlands.

the riddle of Jerome Nicholas Vlieland

Years ago we were asked to look for the roots of Jerome Nicholas Vlieland in Holland by his relatives in England
His great great grandson told a lot about him as he still did know him.
Jerome Nicholas told him he was a Hollander .His father was Jan and his father again a Jan .
So that made him Jan Janszoon(John John) Vlieland.
He hated the French because they killed his brother Jan .And he was born in 1796.
Ans so started our research. After years of searching ,we found him in Rotterdam .Jerome Nicholas Hollander born in 1796 and son of Jan Janssen .
So he was not only a Hollander , he was named like that as well
So that was it.We found him , his father and mother ,but why did he go to England, why was he called Vlieland and not Hollander. He married and had children.
His son was not only a vicar , but master of languages as well and he wrote books about dancing and knitting .

It is always on your mind if you are looking in Rotterdam in the archives in the Napoleontic time.
And today we found in Rotterdam a Jan Vlieland .Maybe the brother who was to be killed later.
He was captain on the ship Wilhelmina .Imprisoned by the French and escaped from the cachot by burning the wood of the prison with the hinges of his bed.
It is an even better story then Les Miserables we think.
So help make the puzzle of this man complete by giving us some pieces of information .

wie weet iets nieuws; got news for me?
