When Clara was 18 she went to work for Joanna Samworth at The Brooklands in Hastings. Miss Samworth was a 56 year old spinster and lived on her own with just Harriet Lane as her cook and Clara as her housemaid. We find the three of them there in the 1891 census. (RG12/760)
