prisons full

prisons fullIn 1796 Jerome was born .
In Rotterdam where the family lived happened a lot during that time .
For not obeying the new French laws of Napoleon many people were imprisoned.
During the French occupation the workhouses and madhouses are full.
On May15 th   1811 were in the workhouse Korte Hoogstraat Rotterdam 127prisoners of which 114 were convicted (86 men and 28 women).4 prisoners in preventive detention and 2 men and 7 women with venereal disease.

The mad or pesthouse used for political prisoners.
We heard of this mad or pesthouse before as Jan Vlieland escaped from this building .
So he was regarded a political prisoner.

To house the prisoners  there were prisoncells under the townhall where Kaat Mossel was from 1784 until 1787.Kaat Mossel ,her real name was Catharina Mulder and she was selling mussels (mossel)in Rotterdam .
She was probably the starter of riots in Rotterdam.
Her name lives on .And it is used in Dutch language   referring  to a strong bitchy women .

the pest or madhouse was for political prisoners ,but did not function as aproper prison..
on the 24 th of August 1811 an attempt of 8 prisoners to escape almost succeeded
Not only the space in the madhouse was limited but there was also a lack of clothes for the prisoners.
In the workhouse there were no clothes at all for some of the prisoners .
Policechief Marivault tries to improve the standard in the workhouse .
But in 1812 the prison and workhouse was finally heated and blankets were provided.
Marivault decided that the prisoners were  to earn some money from their labour in the workhouse..
Marivault and Jan Vlieland met on several occasions .Marivault was the policechief that put Jan behind bars and put an advert in the paper after his escape from the madhouse.
