Francis Edmond Thomas

Francis Edmond THOMAS

No. 388509 Private, 2nd (Northumberland) Field Ambulance
and 81st Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps.

Born 15 October 1878,
Died 10 July 1917, aged 38 years.

Buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria,
Greece, Grave 1766.

He was the younger of two Old Coathamian brothers both killed on active service: see also Harold Morris Thomas.

Commonwealth forces, as well as French, Italian and Russian, were stationed in Greece to counter the threat from Germany’s ally Turkey. There were several military hospitals in and around Kalamaria.
Francis Edmond Thomas was the son of William Roach Thomas and Amy Thomas. Both he and his elder brother Harold Morris Thomas, their parents’ only children, followed their father into the banking profession, and both attended Coatham Grammar School as fee-paying day boys. The 1881 Census records his name as Edmond Francis, but later Census and Army records call him Francis Edmond. Francis was one month short of his ninth birthday when he started school in September 1887, and he remained for 22 terms until December 1894, when he was 16. By 1901 Francis was a bank clerk, lodging in Bishop Auckland. In July 1906, then aged 27, he married Margaret Peacock, aged 22, from Sunderland, and in 1907 they had a son, Philip Roach Thomas. By 1911 Francis had become a bank cashier. His family’s address when news came of his death in July 1917 was 10, Ladysmith Street, Bishop Auckland. By that time, both his parents had died, as had his elder brother Harold.

Thomas Robert Dunn

My gx2 Granddad - Thomas Robert Dunn, the father of Thomas Dunn of the SS Atlantic (of the blog) was one of those who died in the epidemic of 1949* (and thus, the son of one of my great x 3 grandfathers Jerome Nicholas Vlieland, was praying for the life of those, such as the son of another great x 3 grandfathers Thomas Dunn).

The death of their father when he was (just) four and had two younger siblings, no doubt led Thomas Dunn Junior to become a boy sailor on HMS Pembroke** and later to be shipwrecked on SS Atlantic.

No doubt the dire straits of his family also caused younger brother David William (just one when his father died) to ship to Melbourne Australia, where one son, Frederick John - painted on his winning 1901 mount) and two sons of daughter Susannah Catherine all became famous jockeys and won the renowned Melbourne Cup (and one of them ("Darby" Munro to be declared Australia's Greatest Jockey and be commemorated on a 1922 stamp).

The Monumental Inscriptions in Stalisfield Churchyard

The Monumental Inscriptions in Stalisfield Churchyard
In the churchyard of St Mary’s Church Stalisfield are four family graves. Two, on the North side, we know all about:
16. Frances Elizabeth wife of the Rev. J.N. VLIELAND, Vicar of this Parish. Died 20th August 1864, aged 38.
17. The Rev. Jerome Nicholas VLIELAND for 18 years Vicar of this Parish. Died 22nd January 1877, aged 51.
One, on the North East side, we also know:
20. Ann SAMWORTH, 31st December 1871, aged 88.
But one is new to us, and very Vlieland-related:
18. Helena MILLEN, 3rd May 1860 aged 18 months.
This is the eldest child of Phoebe Coulson and William Millen, born in November 1858, the older sister of Alice Edith Millen.

The inscriptions were numbered and copied down in September 1920 by Leland Lewis Duncan, a noted antiquarian and author who originally catalogued the churchyard inscriptions in pencil in his field notebooks. These were typed up for the Kent Archeological Society by Christine Pantrey and checked by Zena Bamping, posted on their website in April 2007. Information on Duncan comes from Frank Bamping’s post for the Society of January 2001 and help also comes from Ted Connell: www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/Mis/Mis/Stalisfield.htm.

The 'great sickness and sudden mortality' in Shoreditch was the 1849 cholera outbreak; the disease came to London from Paris and killed over 14,000 people, twice as many as had died in the previous epidemic in 1832.
