Maria Ferie

Maria Ferie is the grandmother of Catharina Fres and therefore Jerome´s Great Grandmother .
It was difficult to find her.
Her name is spelled  different in all BMDbooks.Farri , Parrie, Ferrie,
There is a  plate  marked F  that could come from Catherine´s part of the family .
The name Veri and sounds the same as Ferie .
It is also in the familytree used as a middlename Catharine Veri Vlieland instead .
So it was worth researching.
We find Maria in Alkmaar in 1698 born as daughter of Henricus Farri and Johanna Jans Vromenbosch.
it is the first child to be found in Alkmaar and there is no marriage .
There is however a Captain Ferri in the army in Heusden .
The Ferie (Farri ,Ferri) family could have been in the army.
They moved from Alkmaar to Leiden .

Plate with F

This plate is in the Vlieland family for years .

It has a bird and crown but a gold F in script on the front.
That is what Gilly told mealready in 2000 .
Looking at the picture 12 years later  I still have not found anything else .

It was made of Hard Paste Porcelain. It is either Chinese export or more probably French. The French were trying to copy the Chinese original at this time so it is hard to tell. It is either late 1780s or early 1790s. The decoration is French, hand painted and is a pattern of sprigs typical of this period in France, later being copied at English works.
Is it Delft or is it Quimper or is it English.?
Who can tell us more .
Gran always insisted that “Catherine, JNV mother was the daughter of a French Count De Verie and that the plate was from that line of the family.

Well we know Catherines last name is Fres  born  in Leiden 1756.
"Dopeling Catharina
Vader Joannis Fris
Moeder Maria Engelbrecht
Getuige Paulus Kriek
Getuige Catharina Engelbrecht
Plaats Leiden
Datum doop 27-11-1756
Bronverwijzing DTB Leiden Doopboek RK Utrechtse Veer,"
So her last name starts with an F.
But then it is getting interesting.
Catharines Mother is Maria Engelbrecht
She is the daughter of Joannis ENGELBRECHT, lakenwerker)drapery maker ), en Maria FERIE
Also written as (FRIE,PARIE,PERRIE,PRÉ,PARRI,PRI.)
Johannes Philippus Engelbrecht (Engelbregt), born1695  Leiden, bapt (rk) on 02-05-1695 Leiden witness  Martinus Jansen).
Banns (1) on 13-04-1720  Leiden witness  his father  Claas Engelbregt and her mother  Jannetje Jans), married on 04-05-1720  Leiden to Maria Frie (Ferie, Parrie), born abt 1700 te Alkmaar,
We found the baptism of Maria in Alkmaar .

The grandparents of Catharina Fres (Jeromes greatgrandparents ) are Johannes Engebrechts and Maria Ferie so that starts with F
But that was not to be .
Then the  plate should be from 1700 and that does not seem  right.
So we are looking for an other F and another count .
We found a count de Vere in 1600 .Maybe we can adopt him ? Although he starts with a V

J.N.Vlieland and Cowper

Bury and Norwich Post 24 November 1847

This William Cowper is the great poet who wrote Amazing Grace.
Bury and Norwich Post 24 November 1847
The only son by any of these marriages to survive adulthood was John by his father’s third wife Catharine Donne born 15th July 1740 and daughter of the Rev. Roger Donne, (Rector of Catfield 1732-1773) and his wife Harriet Judith Rival. It would seem Roger was the brother of Ann who was the mother of the great English poet and writer William Cowper.
This made William Cowper the cousin of John Johnson’s mother Catharine.
Roger and Ann were both Children of Roger Donne of Ludham Hall 1678-1722 and Catharine Clench 1675-1733
It is said John Johnson first met William Cowper when he was in his early 20s and during his time at Cambridge.
Cowper is said to have formed an affection for this “wild and bashful boy” which was reciprocated and named him his “Johnny of Norfolk”.

The Cowper name stays in the johnson family .

The Harpy

The Harpy is a name familair to the Dutch Vlieland family.
Let me explain why.
Hendrik Vlieland  the brother of Jeroen Vlieland sailed with his ship de Jonge Elisabeth from Rotterdam to Havre Le Grace.

On this trip he sailed under Prussian flag to avoid the Anglo-Dutchwar.
But during this trip he was taken as prize by the Kingsship Harpy by commander Henry Bazely.
Being taken as prize meant losing your ship , your cargo ,and taken on board of the privateer and ending as  a prisoner of war in one of the prisons specially built on the Thames.
The prizeship was then towed to an English harbour with aid of some seamen of the kingsship .
The prize was sold ,and the money was shared by the crewmembers of the crew of in this case the Harpy.
In the case of Hendrik Vlieland it was even worse .
His son and crew were killed.
He went to declare first thing on arrival in Dover what had happened to him and his crew .
You can read all this (in English ) in the photocopies below.
He did the same in Rotterdam and in Noordwijk where he lived.
So when he arrived in Dover he went straight to Phineas Kennets to report what had happened.

Later he learned that parts of his ship ended up on the beach of Noordwijk and the parts were recognised by him as well as by Maarten Kruijt mayor of Noordwijk and by Jan de Booy blacksmith.
The crew however was lost and never heard of.
His son Aldert Vlieland (18)among them.
The wifes and mother of the lost crewmembers made a declaration in Noordwijk about the loss of the "jonge Elisabeth"
Date August 20, 1798 January standing before me Jan Gerard Crameris, secretary and Jan Hoekman and Job van der Weijden, sheriffs of both Northern Districts, and Langeveld Offem:
Marijtje Arrishoek, wife of Hendrik Vlieland, Annetje van Duin, wife of Zacharias de Jong, Aaltje Dirkx van Duin, wife of Dirk Pietersz. Balkenende, residing on the first and third in Noordwijk aan Zee and the second to Catwijk aan Zee, which claimed the benefit of all whom this would by no allowed to enter and serve each other when necessary and that her sons in quality as the first captain and her son Aldert Vlieland and the two men also his companions on "de jonge Elisabeth", which was reported last seen in the month of October or beginning of the month November 1797 in Rotterdam and that the English King Ship according to testimony of the first witness husband was Hendrik Vlieland taken deposantes and her first husband was repatriated. All the other men were gone and never heard off.
So that they true and also truly believe it to be on the grounds that they witnesses to this day and the best of knowledge of life or residence of their men and son .
Despite all efforts and searches that have been obtained.
Being witnesses they are prepared to swear an oath to confirm all this.

Hendrik declares being the captain ,he was taken on board the Harpy and taken to Dover .
Because of the rough seas he could not see his ship any longer.
After landing in Dover he complains to Phineas Kennets  and is repatriated to Holland.
Assuming his ship is wrecked and the crew death.
Later parts of the ship were found on the beach of Noordwijk where they washed ashore and were recognised by the Mayor , the black smith and the shipbuilder.
In 1804 Hendrik buys a new ship , again a bomship (nothing to do with boms but with flat bottomship)
de Aufwarter  or The attendant.
And to avoid any trouble with France or England he declares himself inhabitant of Prussia of the county of Knijfshaulen.

In several pieces in the blog you can find parts of the story in.
In the London Gazette you can find the sale of some goods of de jonge Elisabeth
The harpy .

Phineas Kennet .in 1805 Mayor of Dover
Phineas Kennett was Mayor when the guns, twenty-four and twelve pounders were landed at Dover to arm the MartelloTowers, which were then being erected round the coast from Folke-stone to Lydd.

Ariane

Looking for a captain with the name of Vlieland on the internet , we found something completely different.

The handsome captain Johan Vlieland is ill, victim of the sinking of his ship. But on the coast of Madagascar where he arrives there is a sweet lady, Ariane.
and that in Italian

Il bel capitano Johan Vlieland sta male, vittima del naufragio della sua nave. Ma sulle coste del Madagascar dove approda c'è una dolce signora, Ariane, ...

Ariane by Marteen Dee Graham

description

HER HEART BEAT WITH THE SAVAGE SPLENDOR OF THE TROPICAL SEAS....

Raised in an exotic world apart, beautiful raven-haired Ariane was content with her island paradise until the sea swept Captain Johan Vlieland onto Madagascar's shores.

His hair was golden copper; his eyes, the color of storm clouds. He ignited a passion such as Ariane had never known before, yet her own beloved uncle swore he'd see her dead before he'd let this rugged Dutchman take as his wife.

A prisoner in her own home, Ariane vowed to escape, to sail away across the wild seas, to unlock the secrets of her past and find her future in the rapturous embrace of her bold captain, her perfect and forbidden love.

So if you ever see this book read it and tell us if they used the name or the story of the sinking Vlieland captain.

S.S Marama

Finding that Mrs Vlieland and infant Vlieland were on board Marama in1919

you google for Marama and come up with a lot of things .

Photo´s of ss Marama

9 May 1919 Ship: Marama P&O Arrival: London, England (alight at Plymouth) age 32 with 2 year old infant - "577 specially selected passengers mostly ladies and children" - ("specially diverted to Singapore to remove the large number of civilians for whom conveyance to the United Kingdom was urgently required for medical reasons." - Colonel L. WILSON MP - Hansard - House of Commons Debate 20 May 1919 vol 116 c227W227W))

SS. "MARAMA."

HC Deb 20 May 1919 vol 116 c227W227W

Sir WATSON CHEYNE

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Shipping Controller, if he is aware of the hardships to the passengers on board the ss. "Marama" due to overcrowding and defective sanitation; and if he will look into the matter?

Colonel L. WILSON
My right hon. Friend is not aware that any hardships were experienced by the passengers on board the ss. "Marama." This vessel was specially diverted to Singapore to remove the large number of civilians for whom conveyance to the United Kingdom was urgently required for medical reasons. The whole of the accommodation and the sanitary arrangements were inspected by experienced Board of Trade surveyors on arrival of the ship in this country and before the passengers left. It is clear from the report of these surveyors that there was no overcrowding, that the sanitary arrangements were quite satisfactory and that there was no reasonable cause for complaint.

Topsham

We know that Jeroen Vlieland sailed his Post of Topsham from Rotterdam to Topsham and back  for many years .
But what do we know about Topsham .
Just four miles away from Exeter city centre lies the historic port of Topsham. Famed for its shipbuilding and maritime history, Topsham on the Exe Estuary was once a larger port than Exeter itself. Now still delightfully self-contained, it offers a mixture of fascinating architecture including the Dutch style merchants houses is home to antique shops, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants of character.

The Nineteenth Century

In the nineteenth century trade through the port was healthy, with few predicting the decline that would follow the coming of the railway to Exeter, in 1844. A great storm in 1823 moved the channel between Exmouth and Dawlish Warren just at a time when ships were becoming larger. Additional silting of the channel into the port and the completion of the last great extension of the canal to Turf, saw an increasing number of ships unloading their cargoes into lighters, for transportation up the recently enlarged canal or to Topsham quay. The quays at Topsham were serving smaller ships, especially fishing vessel. Ship building went through a revival from around 1790 when there were at least seven shipbuilders in the town, up until 1815. From the turn of the century until 1830 at least 92 vessels were built in the Topsham yards.

TOPSHAM IN SLATER'S DIRECTORY OF 1852
Topsham is a seaport, market town and parish in the Hundred of Wonford, about 4 miles south from Exeter, and nearly 5 above the junction of the River Exe with the sea, and is within the port of Exeter. The river expands here to a considerable width, forming, at high tides, a noble sheet of water. About a mile to the south, on the opposite side of it, are the sea locks opening into the Canal leading to Exeter. A quay was constructed here by Hugh Courtney in the early part of the 14th century; in 1778 it was purchased by the Coporation of Exeter, who improved it and rendered it convenient. The coald and timber trades, ship-building, and rope, twine and sack-making were the chief branches of business carried on here, but they have considerably declined of later years. The beautiful Strand at this place, which is generally admired for the extensive and diversified prospects obtained from it, embracing views on the River Exe, the Canal, the railway and the road, within the distance of a mile, will principally arrest the observation of every stranger.

The places of worship at Topsham are the parish church, and meeting houses for Independents, Unitarians and Wesleyan Methodists. The church is dedicated to St Margaret, and contains some good monuments by Chantrey, and the view from the churchyard is considered very fine.

Topsham, the former port of Exeter, has a long and ancient history. Originally a Roman hamlet, as well as an Anglo-Saxon settlement, it is sited on land bounded by the Exe estuary and the Clyst river.

The Exe estuary was once navigable as far as Exeter, though Topsham’s importance increased when Countess Isabella de Fortibus built a partial weir across the river in 1290 to run her mills. This cut Exeter off from the sea and allowed Topsham to control all maritime trade.

Topsham’s town charter dates back to 1300. Its shipyards supplied three boats to sail against the Spanish Armada. The town was an important Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War. Though Exeter recovered some of the maritime trade when it commissioned England’s first ship canal to be cut between Turf Locks and Exeter Quay, Topsham continued to be a seafaring town of some importance. Shipbuilding was an important trade through the 19th century, and ships still came up to Topsham Quay until the end of the 20th century. Maritime trade with the Netherlands is reflected in the Dutch architecture of The Strand.

Now we know that at least 5 times each year het went to Tiverton.

Loving Spoonfull

An interesting thing happened yesterday. I was looking for something in the depths of a cupboard when I found some silverware which belonged to my grandmother, I have not looked at these items for years, well I had a quick look through and spotted a spoon with a monogram on the handle, the monogram was a stork!! I suddenly thought I wonder if this is the same monogram that is spoken about in the letter. This stork does not carry the eel in it's beak but has it's foot raised on a cross, it is also standing on a twisted rope style ground.
One family member mailed

So here is the stork and of course there  is a back on this spoon

Then another  family member explains this back side .

The duty mark. This is the monarchs head, in this case George III. This was to show duty had been paid to the crown on this spoon before it has its assay mark struck. In this case he is what is called “in cameo” as he has an oval mount around him.

Then the lion is what is called passant (standing on 3 legs) also he is not looking ahead of himself but at you. Hard to tell I know but if you saw one looking ahead you would see how it differs.

The date letter is a Roman uppercase K in a cartouche that is flat at the top with slants either side and a shield shape at the bottom.

Every year and City has variations of these things, the date letter especially, as it can be one of many fonts with a different surround.
The only place that has all these ingredients at one time is London 1805-1806.
And this is what the first familymember had discovered as well
The makers marks of
Thomas Wallis II
as you can see here as well .

So we know it is made in 1805 in London by Thomas Wallis .
Then the stork

The third familymember asked  help at the Dutch  heraldic society about the stork.

And they explained
It  is possible Anglo-Saxon, as the stork with the knob cross under his foot stands on a knot .
This is a so-called crest In the English part of the world it can be used separately without helmet marks on the weapon., As a kind of synecdoche.
Very heraldic and maybe quite understandable but it does not make sense for this familymember .

But we can conclude that it is British and about the time Jerome was born obviously we have no way of knowing if this was part of the Vlieland silver but it is nice to think it could be.

The stork

The stork is also a symbole of birth . Of the city of the Hague in Holland .Of the Stork family in England

the letter of Charles James .

June 11 1905

Dear Sir
In November 1902 you wrote me in answer of an advert, I put in a Dutch Newspaper
I have, owing to certain circumstances let the matter drop .for the time.
I am now desirious of getting certain information if possible.
A certificate of the birth of my grandfather which would I suppose give the name ,social position place of residence of his father also whether there was a family crest
Certain of my relatives think it was a stork with a snake in its bill.
The following details are all I can give you.
If you consider that with them it is useless to proceed please say so
I state you for giving such advice
If you think it is worthwhile kindly let me now what your charges will be ( inclusive)
I will tell you what I am prepared to do.
My Grandfather was born June 27 1796 his name was Jerome Nicholas Vlieland.
(like the island in the Zuijderzee) shown in maps of Holland
His ancestors supposed to have been de Vlielands
One of his grandchildren , a cousin of mine was christened Janson de Vlieland Vlieland
I do not know where in Holland he was born probably at or in near the Hague or Amsterdam
He came to this country with some other members of his family when probably about 25 years old.
He is said to have come as a “refuge” but why I do not know. personally he seems to have had some kind of hatred of the French
He is said to have had an uncle an officer in the Dutch Navy John Vlieland who was killed fighting by the French.
My Grandfather would have been a well educated man ,as he made his living as a professor of languages and wrote volumes in French German and Italian
I should say he was certainly not a Roman Catholic
I am
Yours faithfully
C.J.Vlieland

Joseph Pilkington Brandeth

Joseph Pilkington Brandeth of Liverpool Doctor of Medicin
do hereby certify that I have known Nicholas Jerome Paris who is a
native of France but nowresiding in Liverpool for the last eight years
that he is a person of good conduct and has always conducted
himself towards his Majestys Government and all his majestys
liege subjects in a friendly and peaceable manner
Witness my hand this thirteenth day of March 1824
J.P.Brandeth.

Dr, Joseph Pilkington Brandreth, M.D. (1781-1858) was married
Alice Harper (1791-1852)

his grandfather was
Joseph Brandreth
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Joseph Brandreth M.D. (1746-April 10, 1815) was an English physician.

He was born at Ormskirk, Lancashire, in 1746. After graduating M.D. at Edinburgh in 1770, where his thesis, De Febribus intermittentibus, was published, he exercised his profession in his native town until about 1776, when he succeeded to the practice of Dr. Matthew Dobson, at Liverpool, on the retirement of that gentleman to Bath. He remained at Liverpool for the remainder of his life, and became an eminently successful and popular practitioner. He was a man of wide and various reading, and possessed a most accurate and tenacious memory, which he attributed to his habit of depending on it without referring to notes. He established the Dispensary at Liverpool in 1778, and for thirty years gave great attention to the Infirmary. The discovery of the utility of applying cold in fever is ascribed to him.[1] This remedy he described in a paper On the Advantages arising from the Topical Application of Cold Water and Vinegar in Typhus, and on the Use of Large Doses of Opium in certain Cases. He died at Liverpool, 10 April 1815.

Jerome Nicholas Vlieland in Havre le Grace

In this add from Saturday 13 January 1849 in the Norfolk Chronicle and Norwich Gazette .
Jerome is on the continent in Havre Le Grace  France .

Do you think that place sounds familiair ?

It was in 1848 that the first train arrived there from Paris.
It was a famous port for the immigrant ships to America.

And also of the stories of Jeroen Vlieland .The captain of the mail line to Topsham .
His brother Hendrik Vlieland sailed with his ship `The young Elisabeth`  from Rotterdam to Havre le Grace and was captured by Henry Bazely and his Kingsship `The Harpy`.
The ship ended as prizeship  and was sold .
The son of Hendrik was killed .
Hendrik complained to the clercks office
Parts of his ship were later recovered in the place he lived Noordwijk.
Where they washed ashore.
Of this event is a lot of documentary.
The documents of the ship where discovered by us in the National Archives in Kew  where they
were kept.
Letters  of complaints and the the complaints of the wifes and widows of the crewmembers .
Here are the links again to reread those stories.

Hendrik Vlieland and his ship de Jonge Elisabeth.
