Arthur Lionel Pedder

Arthur Lionel Pedder was a nephew of  Adolphus Charles White  and mentioned in his will  and married to Caroline Swinhoe.
I bequeath to my nephew Arthur Lionel Pedder my gold studs and sleeve links and also
my gold signet ring..


Baptism: 5 Nov 1879 St John the Baptist Hillingdon Father: William Henry Pedder Mother: Caroline  Swinhoe  .
Born Feb 8, 1868, Arthur is baptised at the same time as Violet Lilian b Feb 4, 1862 and Alice Kate b Nov 15, 1868. 
 Arthur is shown in the census as being born in Tamerton Foliot, Devon, England but at least one of the Pedder children had been born in China and few show up in any UK census. 

Though Adolphus and Sarah have no children, the 1871 census shows the house full of children, including a great niece and nephew and a nephew Arthur Lionel Pedder aged three from another of Eliza’s relatives. Arthur, a beneficiary in Adolphus’s will, becomes a Fellow & Tutor of Magdelen College Oxford (he is shown as a tutor there in the 1901 census) . 
Shown as a lecturer in Mathematics in the 1891 census when he, Alica and Maude are lodging in Coronation Terrace, Ilfracombe together with mother Caroline. After his time lodging at Magdelen College, he has moved down to Wayside, Tubney, Abingdon by the time of the 1911 census but his death on 15 Dec 1934 is at Kistor House, Totnes, Devon. Probate on 16 Oct 1935 is granted to to solicitors articled clerk Registry: Bodmin effects: £8,168 3s 3d

Pedder was a famous name in China; not least Caroline’s husband WH Pedder. Sent to China as a ‘second interpreter’ at 18, he progressed to become the British Consul at Amoy, as did his brother in law Robert Swinhoe - the naturalist friend of Charles Darwen. By 1897 Hong Kong has a Pedders Wharf and Hill and Pedder Street.
