This description and pictures of the White Horse Inn, Maiden Newton, Dorset, England were originally published in The Old Inns of Old England and a Picturesque Account of the Ancient and Storied Hostelries of our own Country, Volume II by Charles George Harper, Published in 1906 by Chapman and Hall,Limited.
“Among the various inns mentioned in Thomas Hardy’s novels, the “White Horse” at Maiden Newton was exceptionally picturesque. “Was,” and is not, for already, in the little while between the writing of Tess of the D’ Urbervilles and now, that fine old stone hostelry of the seventeenth century has been pulled down, to make way for a smart new red-brick house, all show and glitter. The old house was the original of the inn at ” Chalk-Newton,” where Tess breakfasted, on the way to Flintcomb Ash.”

The latter was born in Wellington, moved to Subiaco, Perth Australia and was a shipping manager. He joined the Australian Army Service Corps in August 1916 - his next of kin was Bertha Evelyn ? (1885-1963) of 339 Barker Rd, Subiaco, Western Australia
Robert Hammond Benzie writes:
My father's father was, I believe Robert Hammond. He was I think the first or second generation born after the family left Scotland. He was a merchant in Maidstone and carried all his cargo by barge up the Thames, also as a general carrier. He had in his first marriage four sons. The eldest was of course Robert Hammond and carried on the business after his father. The second marriage produced three sons, one my Father (the youngest) and he was only two weeks old when his father died.
My Father or Henry married a young lady names Louisa Chambers. This young lady's father was a contractor and had a big business in Maidstone.
The Benzies and a son (Sydney Charles) left England in the sailing ship "wave Queen" in 1882 for New Zealand. (The ship was lost with all hands in her next voyage.) In 1884 William was born, myself (Robert Hammond) in 1886 and our two sisters in 1889.
In March 1896 we left New Zealand for Western Australia sailing in the Union Steamships Company's steamer "Waketipu" transshipping at Sydney onto the A.U.S.N. Company "Wahroonga" arriving at Fremantle the first week in April.
This Robert Hammond met a girl names Bertha Evelyn Aberle and married her. Bertha's fathers name was Wilhelm Christian and her Mothers maiden name was Anne Susan Roughton. This couple came out in the same sailing ship and landed in Adelaide marrying there. Mr Aberle left Germany when he was 17 years old living in England until he came to Australia.

James Benzie
found on the internet
In London, at the General Register Office, we searched records of birth and found James BENZIE's name and birthdate - April 16th 1838. We obtained a copy of a birth certificate which stated that his father's name was Robert Hammond BENZIE, described as an Ironmonger, and that he lived in Wiat Street, Maidstone. We found a Wiat (or more properly Wyatt) Street quiet easily and saw some buildings old enough to be the birth place but could not be sure, of course. The next avenue of enquiry was at the Public records' room. There we consulted directories covering a number of years, commencing 1872. Although several BENZIEs were listed, it was hard to draw many conclusions.
Later, in London again, we were able to sight the will of Robert Hammond BENZIE, father of James BENZIE, who died on 15th December 1858. Effects were under one thousand pounds. he was described as a coal merchant. beneficiaries under the Will were his four sons: the brothers Robert, Simpson, James and George BENZIE.

The architects for the new building are MessBS. Packham and Croote, Paris-street, Exeter, and the builder Mr. Edward Carnell, Ottery.
A new Baptist chapel was opened at Ottery St. Mary, Devon, on Thursday week. It adjoins a former chapel, which will henceforth be utilised as a schoolroom. It is built of brick, with B^er stone dressings, and measures 50ft. by 30ft. The seats are of pitch pine varnished, and accommodate, in- cluding provision for choir ami children in gallery, 350 persons. The architects are Messrs. Packham and Croote, of Exeter, and the builder is Mr. E. Carnell, of Ottery. The cost is said to have been only .£500.
On Monday the memorial stone was laid, at Exeter, of a block of artisans' dwellings, to be erected by a local benefit building and freehold land society. The block is an attempt to erect substantial and convenient bouses, fitted for the working classes, which could be let at a rent within the meaus of those for whom they were intended, and yet at the same time give a return of 5 per cent, on the capital invested. The property abuta on Rack.street, on the west quarter, and in front on the Broad Stones. It is intended to erect eleven dwellings, each containing five rooms, and though the buildings will necessarily be plain and unorna- mental, they will provide what is required for health and comfort. The dwellings will be formed of three separate blocks — one of five and another of four — rnuning parallel with each other, and two at the higher end of the site. The entrance will be from Rack.street. The architects are Messrs. Packham and Croote, and the cost of each house ia ronghly estimated at about i;i70. Messrs. Braily and Son are the builders.
